The volume is dedicated by Luigi Canonico Crespi to King Carlo Emanuele III of Sardinia.

Summary Note

This is presented as a 'Tomo Terzo' because, as Luigi Crespi states in the dedication, it is intended to supplement the two-volume Felsina Pittrice by C.C. Malvasia published in 1678.

Malvasia's Felsina Pittrice had traced the course of painting at Bologna from the early Renaissance through the Carracci to the author's contemporaries, Guido Reni and Domenichino. In this continuation Luigi Crespi takes the opportunity of criticising adversely some of his own contemporary Bolognese painters and the teaching methods of the Accademia Clementina, of which he never became a member. The ensuing controversy led Crespi to publish in 1770 his Dialoghi di un amatore della verità in difesa del terzo tomo della Felsina Pittrice.

The plates are portraits of artists.
