Summary Note

Malvasia's Felsina Pittrice was published to adjust what he regarded as the Florentine focus of Vasari's lives. It traced the course of painting at Bologna from the early Renaissance through the Carracci to the author's contemporaries, Guido Reni and Domenichino. Full of detail and anecdote it remains a valuable source of information about Bolognese artists.

Most illustrations are full-page portraits of artists; but also include the genealogical tree of the Carracci, several devices of the printer and vignettes.

20 February 1845: 'Resolved that the following works be purchased of Mr. Molini for the Library, viz. La Felsina Pittrice ...' (RA Council Minutes, X, 55). Purchased from C. F. Molini together with a copy of Luigi Crespi's continuation in matching binding.

Copy Note

In Volume II the title-page and list, 'Pittori De' quali si tratta ...' have been bound in at the end of the book.

Binding Note

18th-century white vellum; gilt-decorated spines, brown morocco spine-labels lettered 'Malvasia Felsina Pittrice. Tom. I. (II.)'.
