Summary Note

The texts are revised versions of Planche's salon reviews. The first volume describes the salons of 1831, 1833, 1834, 1836; the second, those of 1836, 1837, 1838, 1840, 1846, 1847, 1852. At first Planche praised such Romantic artists as Delacroix. He later became a fierce critic of Courbet's 'realism'.
