Summary Note

This publication reprints works by André Félibien and his son Jean-François, and one work by Catherine Perrot (afterwards Horry). André Félibien's Entretiens had first been published between 1666 and 1688; his Conférences, in 1669; his Songe de Philomathe, in 1684; his Idée du peintre parfait, in 1706. J.F. Félibien's Recueil historique de la vie et des ouvrages des plus celebres architectes was first published in 1687; his Les Plans et les descriptions de deux ... maisons de campagne de Pline, in 1699; his Description ... des Invalides, in 1702. Catherine Perrot's Les leçons royales ou manière de peindre en mignature had first appeared in 1686.

The Entretiens are a critical history of European painting from antiquity to the 17th century, and conclude with a section praising the work of Poussin. J.F. Félibiens's Recueil ... des plus célèbres architectes is the first general history of architecture to Renaissance times, and includes notices of Arab architecture.

The two engraved title-plates (Vols. I, V) are allegoric compositions relating to the arts and to architecture. The four plates in Vol. III show shadows and reflections. Seven of the plates in Vol. VI show reconstructed plans of Pliny the younger's villas and gardens; the eighth is a plan of the Hostel Des Invalides, Paris.
