Summary Note

The publication-date of 1818 is carried by all four title pages; but the work was published serially - all plates carrying publication dates of 1808, 1810-1819 (two plates carrying the 1819 date). The 'Directions To The Binder' in Volume IV include instructions for some changes in the arrangement of the work.

The work shows and describes paintings in the Stafford collection. Several plates show more than one painting; and the first thirteen plates provide a valuable record of the hang of the collection.

Stafford (afterwards first Duke of Sutherland) inherited pictures from his father, his mother and his maternal uncle, the Duke of Bridgewater; and himself enlarged the collection. Some of its holdings had formerly been part of the Orléans collection. Stafford admitted the public to Stafford House, was a founding member and later president of the British Institution, actively promoted the establishment of the Dulwich and National Galleries, and presented the National Gallery with several paintings.

The plates carry the names of the source-artists, and their measurements. According to an advertisement published by Samuel Leigh they were available as prints, at £35.14s., or as India Proofs, at £71.8s., or Coloured and mounted, at £171.14s. They show paintings by:
