The publication-date of 1849 is carried by the title-page and all plates, except plate [4], which carries the date of 1848. (Plate [3] gives the date 1848 alongside the engraver's signature but 1849 with that of the publisher.)

The plates show chiefly landscapes, after William Allan, Robert Scott Lauder, Edmund T. Crawford, William Simson, Edward Duncan, R.T. Ross, D.O. Hill, Thomas Faed, Horatio McCulloch, James Drummond or Frances Stoddart.

19th-century half brown morocco, marbled-papered boards; gilt-decorated spine lettered 'Royal Association For Promotion Of The Fine Arts In Scotland 1849 1852 1853' and 'R.A.' Bound with two others.
