505 0 # $a “The various subjects illustrated in this work have been selected from the series of Water-colour drawings made on the spot by the author during his tour in the East in 1866, when Travelling Student of the Royal Academy. Some of the more ancient monuments have suffered since, but not to any great extent. Cairo itself has undergone great changes, and some of the buildings drawn have been pulled own to make way for the new Boulevards. The Drawings have been reproduced by Sprague & Co.’s Ink-photo process, and the reproductions, with the exception of three (the original of which were copied from drawings by the late Professor Brune, of Paris), were taken originally for the “Architect.” In the description which is here appended the Author is indebted for much of his information to Mr. Stanley Lane Poole’s work on “The Art of the Saracens in Egypt.” (Chapman & Hall), and to Murray’s Handbook on Egypt, revised, 1880, by Mr. F.A. Eaton, Secretary of the Royal Academy. The dates given to the Monuments of Ancient Egypt are those calculated by Sir Gardner Wilkinson.” [Preface].
