Summary Note

The Academy's holding consists of nine unnumbered portraits signed as printed by P. Soutman, preceded by a dedication plate by P. Soutman, but with no title-page, publication-date or indication from where they may be taken. They are perhaps from one of Soutman's two series of portraits - Effigies Imperatorum domus Austriacæ (1644) or Ferdinandus IIus et IIIus imperatorum domus Austriacae ... Comites Nassoviae (1643). The dedication plate reads: 'Celsissimo Principi Frederico Henrico Principi Arausionensium, Comiti Nassauio, Foederatorum Belgarum Gubernatori, Et Utriusque Eorumdum Militiæ Imperatori Pio, Felici, Invicto, Domi, Militiæque Laudatissimos Maiores Suos Præsertim Guilielmum Patrem, Et Mauritiû Fratrem Augustissimæ Reip. Duces, Iconibus Hisce Expressos Dedicat Petrus Soutman.'

The nine portraits, as the dedication states, show the ancestors, father and brother of Prince Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange, Count Nassau. Each is captioned in Latin, as follows: Adolphus nassavius, Rom. Imperator; Renatus Nassavius, De Chalon Princeps Auriacus; Henricus Comes nassavius; Guilielmus Nassavius, Princeps Auriacus; Philippus Nassavius, Princeps Auriacus; Mauritius Nassavius, Princeps Auriacus; Fr. Henricus Nassavius, Princeps Auriacus; Amelia De Solms Princ. Auriaca; Guilielmus Nassavius, Nat. Princeps Auriacus.
