Summary Note
The publication-dates of the three volumes are given on their title pages as 1840, 1850 and 1857. The folding plan (bound into Vol. I or Vol. III) carries the date of 1838. The volumes of plates were issued serially, the first in 20 parts from ca. 1825 to 1840, the second in twenty parts from 1840 to 1850, the third in 21 parts from 1851 to 1857.
These three volumes of plates were accompanied by a volume of text (1840).
The work was produced in the belief, which Letarouilly shared with Percier and Fontaine, that Italian Renaissance architecture would be a good model in the nineteenth century. However, several plates show details of earlier or later buildings (from the 4th century to the 18th).
