$a The work had first been published in folio in 1733. It was one of the most influential books on horsemanship and dressage. The author writes of such exercises as the 'shoulder-in' (which he is thought to have invented), the 'flying change' and 'counter-canter'. He sometimes refers to the work of William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Newcastle. The plates designed by Parrocel probably reproduce those of the first edition, which were provided by him. |
