Responsibility Note

In Volumes I (Series I, II), II (Series III ) and III (Series IV-VI) most plates are signed as chromolithographed by F. Dreger and published by F. Solntsev; but the French title-plate in Volume I is signed as chromolithographed by Bachmann. In the Supplement (in Vol. II) one plate is signed as drawn by L. Yakovlev, most are signed as lithographed by V. Vachman (Bachmann), and some as published by D. Strukov.

Summary Note

Publication-dates of '1849 - 1865' are given on the spines; and the Supplement (in the second volume) carries the date 1865. A second general title-plate in Volume I gives the title of the work in French: 'Antiquités De L'Empire De Russie éditées Par Ordre De Sa Majesté L'Empereur Nicolas I.' The work appears to have been published to be accompanied by text-volumes [which are not present in the Royal Academy's copy].

The plates are captioned in Russian and French throughout (except in the Supplement, where they are in Russian only).

In the first volume are bound the plates of Series I (icons, liturgical objects, vestments of patriarchs) and Series II (imperial regalia); in the second are bound those of Series III (banners, armour, carriages, harnesses &c.) and the Supplement (flags); in the third are bound the plates of Series IV (costumes and portraits), V (vessels and utensils) and VI (architectural monuments). Most plates carry a scale-bar; most are printed in full color.
