Palomino includes anecdotes of several painters whom he knew himself, including Velázquez. The German text translates the 126 biographies of Palomino's original, and adds two more - one of Palomino, the other of Mengs. It is printed in black-letter.

There are no plates. The title-page vignette shows two putti looking at a painting on an easel; the tailpiece at the end of biography no. 127 shows an allegoric female figure in a cloud.
