Responsibility Note

The illustrations of the 1753/4 issue are unsigned. In the 1754/5 issue one headpiece is signed as designed and engraved by Carolus Casanova, other illustrations are signed as designed by Ant. Gonzz. (or Gonzs.) and engraved by Palom[in]o, and one tailpiece is signed 'V.Rz'. In the 1756 issue several illustrations are signed as drawn by Ant. Gonz. and engraved by Palom[in]o. In the 1757 issue some illustrations are signed as designed by Ant. Gonz. and engraved by Palom[in]o, and two are signed 'V.Rz.' In the 1760 issue the title plate and dedication are engraved and are signed as engraved by Espinosa; the three plates are signed as drawn and engraved by G. Gil; other illustrations are signed as drawn by Ths. Prieto or T. Lopez and engraved by Cruz, Mingt. (?), Lopez or Jn. Ferno. Palomino.

A variant title occurs on the title page of the first issue: 'Relacion De La Distribucion De Los Premios Concedidos Por El Rey N.S. Y Repartidos Por la Real Academia De S. Fernando A Los Discipulos De Las Tres Nobles Artes Pintura, Escultura, Y Architectura, En la Junta General Celebrada en 23. de Diciembre de 1753. Y presidida por su Protector El Excmo. Most issues contain a dedication to the king, a resumé of the Academy's work, a list of subjects set for prizes, a list of prize-winners, an address or addresses, poems and a list of Members.

Most issues are unillustrated; but the issue for 1760 has three plates, and the issues for 1753/4, 1754/5, 1756, 1757 and 1760 have in-text illustrations (title-page vignettes, headpieces, tailpieces, decorated initials).

Provenance

On the front loose endpaper of Volume I are pasted two notes, inscribed in ink, (1) 'These four Volumes of the Actas of the Spanish Academy belong to the Royal Academy of London P. Hoare'; (2) 'a small Spanish Edition of the Lives' [supra, 'Diccionario'] 'of the Spanish Painters belongs also to the R. Academy P.H I think in six Vols All to be returned to the R. Academy'. The verso of the front loose endpaper of Volume I is inscribed in ink, 'P. Hoare for the Royal Academy.' The verso of the front loose endpaper of Volume IV is inscribed in ink, 'this book belongs to the Royal Academy. P.H.' Prince Hoare was the Royal Academy's Secretary for Foreign Correspondence from 1799 to 1834.

Binding Note

18th-century mottled calf; gilt-decorated spine, red and black morocco spine-labels lettered 'Actas De La Academi De San Fernand · I ·(- IV·)'. The first five issues are bound in Volume I with one other work.
