Summary Note

The date of publication is not engraved in the work; but Francesco Piranesi in his catalogue of his own and his father's work states that it was published in 1778, and this is known to be the date of the papal imprimatur. Each plate carries an engraved caption in French. Fifteen of Piranesi's drawings for this suite are now in the the Sir John Soane's Museum, London. The ruins at Paestum had earlier been descibed in Suite de plans des trois temples antiques à Paestum (1764, with engravings by Dumont after Soufflot) and The ruins of Paestum (1768, with engravings by Thomas Major after Soufflot and others).
