$a The publication-date of 1836 is given on the title page; but in Volume I some plates carry the dates, 1835, 1836, 1837, 1838, 1839, 1840, in Volume II one plate carries the date 1838, and in Volume III one plate carries the date 1840. Originally published in 60 numbers, the work was not in fact completed until 1843. Some in-text illustrations in Volume I carry the dates of 1839 or 1840. The Royal Academy's copy is bound in three volumes, but there are no title pages for volumes II and III and the pagination of all three volumes is continuous.
