In these dialogues between a painter and his pupil Carducho argues for the status of painting as a liberal art, and surveys the history and methods of the most celebrated painters. His theory derives from G.P. Lomazzo, F. Zuccaro and other Italian writers. In the eighth dialogue Carducho describes paintings in contemporary collections in Madrid.

The Diálogos are followed by a Memorial Informatorio Por Los Pintores En El Pleito Que Tratan El Sr. Fiscal De S.M. En El Real Consejo Hacienda Sobre La Exencion Del Arte De La Pintura, first published in 1629, in which Lope de Vega and others argue for the exemption of painters from commercial taxes on the grounds that they are practitioners of a liberal art.

The first plate reproduces the original title-plate. The second shows a portrait of Vicente Carducho. The third to the eleventh reproduce plates of the first edition showing allegories of painting.
