The half-title reads: 'The Malcolm Collection. Descriptive Catalogue Of Drawings By The Old Masters.'

In 1860 John Malcolm had bought J.C. Robinson's collection of drawings, which was rich in works by Italian 16th-century draughtsmen such as Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael, some of which had belonged to Sir Thomas Lawrence. In 1866 he had added drawings by Claude and 17th-century Dutch masters. By 1869 his collection consisted of some 780 drawings.

Two years after Malcolm's death his drawings and prints were bought by the British Museum.
