520 2 # $a The author argues that St Luke the Evangelist could not have painted an image of the Mother of Christ, and considers whether images painted in Italy in the 11th or 14th century may have been attributed to him.

The earlist recorded references to St Luke's painting an image of the Mother of Christ are of the 5th century. In the 8th century St. John Damascene refers to the tradition in the course of his defence of the veneration of images. It was a popular belief that this image was transferred from the Holy Land to Constantinople, and was the prototype of the icon known as the 'Hodegetria'. Several icons have at different times been attributed to St Luke; and the saint became regarded as a patron not only of physicians but also of painters. Several academies of art have been named in his honour.
