Summary Note
The work consists of six volumes and a one-volume appendix. Publication-dates are given on the title-pages as 1857, 1858, 1859, 1860, 1861, 1863 and 1864. On the title-page of the seventh volume the volume-number is replaced by the words, 'Aanhangsel. A-Z.'
Besides being an art historian, Christiaan Kramm was also well-known as an architect. In 1834-7 he built the Paleis van Justitie in Utrecht, in Doric Greek-Revival style.

The front loose endpaper of Volume I is inscribed in pencil, 'S.A.H.', i.e. S.A. Hart, librarian of the Royal Academy, 1864-81.
