508 # # $a In this issue plate 7 carries the signature 'Calot, and plate 18, 'Callot'. No other plate carries the name of draughtsman or engraver.

All plates, apart from the title-plate and nos. 4, 9, 17, carry the signature of 'Israel' (sometimes 'Isarel') [that is, Israel Henriet] as printer, with the royal privilege.

J. Lieure states that the verse captions were written by Michel de Marolles, abbé de Villeloin.

520 2 # $a No publication-date is carried by this issue; but the imprint 'Leon: Schenk' appears to refer to Leonardus Schenk (1696-1767), who was active ca. 1720 - 1740. The work had first been issued with title-plate reading, 'Les Miseres Et Les Mal-Heures De La Guerre Représentez Par Iacques Callot Noble Lorrain. Et mis en lumière Par Israel Son amy. A Paris 1633 Avec Privilege du Roy'.

The plates are captioned with verses in French, and show the miseries of the Thirty Years' War. They are probably Callot's most famous prints. Their simple and open style of engraving echoes that of the woodcutterss of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries - whereas most most contemporary woodcutters were tending to copy the effects of engraving.
562 # # $a Plates 4 and 6 have been partly coloured by hand.
