Robert Hay had made recording exhibitions to Egypt during 1824-8 and 1829-34, with Joseph Bonomi the younger, F. Catherwood, F. Arundale, C. Laver and O. Browne Carter. The notes of these exhibitions remain in the British Museum; but in 1840 Hay published his Illustrations of Cairo. A small number of Hay's Egyptian antiquities were bought by the British Museum in 1868; the rest were bought in 1872 for the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
