Summary Note

The collections at Petworth had been bought by successive generations of the Wyndham family, and enlarged by G.O. Wyndham, third earl of Egremont (1751-1837), who bought works not only by old masters but also by contemporary artists, including J.M.W. Turner. The catalogue lists works by Beechey, Bellini, Blake, Bolteby, Bronzino, Chardin, Claude, Clint, Correggio, Cuyp, Dahl, Durer, Elsheimer, Gainsborough, Guardi, Hoare of Bath, Hogarth, Holbein, C. Janesen, Kneller, Lely, Phillips, Poussin, Rembrandt, Reynolds, Rubens, Ruysdael, Stubbs, Teniers, Titian, Turner, Van Dyck, Velázquez, Wootton and others.

At the time of the publication of this catalogue Petworth and its collections were owned by Egremont's natural son, George Wyndham, 1st baron Leconfield. The house is now owned by the National Trust.
