The folding plate facing p.[1] is captioned as after Titian, and signed 'TL', 'WE' and 'Rota', and 'Cowell's Anastatic Press, Ipswich'. Plate [23] is signed as printed by 'Autotype', i.e. the Autotype Company (who in 1868 had acquired the patent rights of J.W. Swan's carbon print process - which became widely used in the late 19th century for book illustrations and reproduction of conventionally made photographs). In-text illustrations are unsigned. The printer is named on the half-title verso and in the colophon: 'London: Printed By Spottiswoode And Co., New-Street Square And Parliament Street'. The Preface carries the date of 'May 1, 1869'; but the Postscript begins, 'An opportunity has been afforded me to record some facts gleaned during a visit to Cadore in the autumn of 1869, since the publication of this work' and carries the date of 'Dec. 1, 1869'. The work describes the Cadore region, Italy, and the author's travels there. The plates are views. The Preface describes them as 'drawn with a pen upon stone'; while the in-text illustrations are listed as woodcuts. Two plates are early examples of carbon-print photographs of art-works (pl. [23, 26]); one (fold. pl. [27], facing p.1.) is a facsimile of Titian's drawing of the battle of Cadore. The last two, unnumbered pages carry an advertisement for the book, 'The Dolomite Mountains' by J. Gilbert and G.C. Churchill. |
