Summary Note

"During the past ten years many of the books published as Penguins have been decorated, on the covers and in the text, with wood engravings by distinguished living artists. Because of the very large editions we have never been able to print these from the original wood blocks, nor has it always been possible to do full justice to the charm of these delicate creations on the cheap board and paper we have to use. With the intention of showing them at their best we print on the following pages a selection of engravings from a score of books published since nineteen hundred and forty-nine." [Foreword by Allen Lane]

Copy Note

"Of this book one thousand five hundred copies were printed at Christmas 1958 at the Westerham Press, Kent, and bound at the Dorstal Press, Harlow, Essex. Monotype Van Dijk was used for the text. The paper is Hosho-Shi from the Berrick Brothers, London, EC1, who also supplied the wood veneer for the cover" - colophon.
