$a Publication-dates rangeing from 1868 to 1870 accompany many of A. Hill's signatures. No publication-place is given on the title-plate, but the text printed on the upper cover states it to be 'Cork'. The work describes the cathedral built largely in the 12th and 13th centuries but with later additions, on the site of a monastery founded by Saint Brendan in the sixth century. The ruins include a Romanesque west doorway, 13th-century east window, nine lancets in the south wall, effigies of the late 13th to early 14th centuries, and 15th-century battlements. (Within the adjoining graveyard is the church of Temple Na Hoe, about which Hill wrote a separate monograph.) The ten lithographed plates show plans, elevations, sections, views and architectural details. These are followed by two unnumbered plates carrying two photographs each, showing interior and exterior views. Two further photographs are included - one acting as an in-text headpiece to the Index To The Plates, showing a round-arched doorway, the other attached to the title-plate, showing a bas-relief of a bishop. |
