Summary Note

The work is a pictorial account of the new St Peter's up to 1620, preceded by a brief history (Dichiarazione), drawing on earlier authorities such as Alfarano, Grimaldi and Gioanfattori, and by notes on the plates.

The plates include plans of the old Constantinian basilica, plans, elevations and sections of the new basilica (one shows the old and new plans superimposed), details of the new church's exterior and interior, and projects designed by Ferrabosco.

The work was intended for publication in 1620 - and some sets of the plates for that edition survive. It was originally dedicated to Pope Paul V, but the dedication on the new 1684 title plate is to Pope Innocent XI.

Acquired by 1802. Recorded in Catalogue Of The Library In The Royal Academy, London (1802).
