The text consists of a 'Précis Historique', followed by descriptions of the 'État Primitif' and 'État Actuel' of the arch.
The plates show: 1-5. perspective, plan, sections and elevations; 6-7. decorative details; 8-10. bas-reliefs; 11-12. decorative details; 13. statues; 14-23 relief decorations above the arches on each side of the monument; 24. medallions of the campaigns of 1805; 25-26. bas-reliefs showing the duc d'Angoulême's campaigns, installed by 1828 in place of those showing campaigns of Napoleon; 27. twenty-four ground-pans showing proposals from 1667 to 1812 to unite the Louvre and the Tuileries.
Percier and Fontaine's Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel, built in 1806-7, was modelled on that of Septimius Severus in Rome. The same period saw the erection of J.F.T. Chalgrin's Arc de Triomphe at the head of the Champs Elysées (1806-36), and in London Nash's Marble Arch (1825-8) and Burton's Constitution Arch (1827-8).
