General Note

On the presentation page, facing the title-page, there is a note from the publishers, 'While this book was passing through the press its author died at Venice, on Tuesday the 15th of January last. Before his departure for Italy, however, he had corrected all the proofs with his accustomed scrupulous care, and had arranged the details of the ornamentation. Nothing therefore was left for the Publisher but to see that his directions were faithfully attended to.' (dated Edinburgh, April 23, 1878) The work includes Contents, List of Illustrations, [text], Letter of Don John of Austria [in facsimile with English translation and transcription of the Spanish]. The colophon states, 'The plates and ornaments of this work are reproduced in photo-lithographic facsimile or drawn on stone by G. Waterston, Sons, & Stewart. The typography is by Thomas & Archibald Constable, printers to the Queen and to the university.'

Copy Note

The presentation page indicates, 'Only two hundred and fifty copies printed on Dutch paper of which this is number 3'.

Binding Note

The binding of this book is in yellow and black striped cloth with emblems/arms. There is no spine title.
