Summary Note

Walpole had already published his catalogue of his father's collection of paintings when he acquired George Vertue's notes in 1758, which he edited, supplemented and began to print on his own press in 1762. Dallaway's edition had been published in 5 volumes between 1826 and 1828.

The Anecdotes remain a useful source-compendium for the history of art in Britain.

The plates are portraits - most, of artists; some, of patrons. They are captioned with the name of the sitter, and captioned or signed with the name of the source artist. Source artists include J.
