Responsibility Note

The portrait of Weirotter is signed as engraved by J. Schmuzer.

Most plates are signed as drawn and engraved, or made, by F.E. Weirotter. In this edition many still carry the names of an earlier printer (Prevost; Huquier; Basan), printseller (Wille; Basan et Pognant; Prevost; Petit; Huquier) or dedicatee (Jacques Schmutzer; Princess Maria Christina; M. de Peters; M. Wille; M. Brillon Duperon; Prince Albert; Georg von Starhemberg; Princess Maria Anna; Anton von Kaunitz; F. Boucher; M. Condet; M. de Monville).

A few are signed as engraved by Weirotter after another draughtsman (P. Molyn; Van Goyen). One ('Petit Village Près D'Amsterdam') is unsigned by Weirotter, but is signed as drawn by Wandreneer and printed and sold by Basan.

Summary Note

The publication-date of 1775 is suggested in a manuscript note in the British Library copy. (The firm of Basan and Poignant operated from 1773 to 1788.)

This is a posthumous collected edition of most of the prints of a popular landscape-etcher, who had produced some 288 etchings. The landscapes show the influence of 17th-century Dutch as well as contemporary French painting. Several bear names of dedicatees, who were probably collectors of Weirotter's oeuvre.

Weirotter's prints are preceded by a portrait of him, engraved by his friend J. Schmuzer.

The enormous collection of Weirotter's prints, in various states, that was made by Prince von Paar may now be seen in the British Museum, London.

Provenance

Recorded in RAA Library, Catalogue, 1802.

Binding Note

20th-century half calf; retaining earlier marbled-papered boards and red morocco spine label lettered 'Oeuvres De Weirotter'.
