Summary Note

The title page states that the essay is 'From The Westminster Review, No. LXVI'; but gatherings A, B, D of the text carry the numbering, 'Vol. XXXIV. No. 1.' and gathering C, 'Vol. XXXIII. No. 1.'

A pencilled inscription on the title page attributes this essay to Thackeray - who was a regular reviewer of the exhibitions of the Royal Academy and other institutions, and also made illustrations for some of his own works.

Title page inscribed in ink, 'W.C. Risley from his brother John August 4th. 1846' (this is repeated on the first page of text), and in pencil, 'by Thackeray'.

Binding Note

19th-century green papered boards, upper and lower covers with blind-stamped decoration; spine lettered 'George Cruikshank' and 'R.A.' There has been bound in after the text, 'Tilt And Bogue's Catalogue Of New Books' (MDCCCXLI; 16 pages).
