Responsibility Note

The two unnumbered plates are signed as designed and drawn by F.M. Tosi and engraved by A. Becchio. The numbered plates are signed as measured and drawn by Tosi and engraved by Becchio.

The Italian texts for plates 26-50 are said by the British Library catalogue to be identical with those by Giuseppe Checchetelli published in the Raccolta di monumenti sacri e sepolcrali scolpiti in Roma (1842).

'This first edition published out of Italy' is dedicated by Mastraca, editor, Native of the Island of Corfu, to the President and Members of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Summary Note

The publication-date of 1843 is given on the title page. The dedication carries the date of 10 September 1842; the letter from the Academy of St Luke to Tosi and Becchio carries the date of 1837. Most plates carry dates - of 1833, 1834, 1835, 1836, 1837, 1838 and 1839. The British Library catalogue states that the fifty numbered plates are identical with the first fifty published in Raccolta di monumenti sacri e sepolcrali scolpiti in Roma (1842).

The text is printed in Italian, English and French in parallel columns.

The plates are outline drawings. The fifty numbered plates show Renaissance monuments in Rome. The two unnumbered plates are explained by Mastraca in his dedication: 'This work is enriched by two monuments of the composition of M. Tosi, the one serving as a frontispiece and consecrated to the memory of the sublime poet Dante, the second to that of the celebrated Petrarch'.
