The works of art at Wilton House had been bought chiefly by the fourth earl of Pembroke (who acquired works by Holbein, Titian, Giorgione, Correggio and Tintoretto and by contemporaries such as D. Mijtens, Van Dyck and Lely) and by the eighth earl (who acquired coins, sculpture and paintings by Lotto, Tintoretto, Rembrandt, L. van Leyden and the 'Wilton diptych'). At the time of the publication of this catalogue they were in the possession of the tenth earl.
