Summary Note

Some of Sir Martin's earlier publications on art had been in verse - his Rhymes on art (1805) (in which he argued for British patronage of native artists), his Elements in art (1809), described by himself as 'rough sententious rhyme', and Commemoration of Reynolds and other poems (1814) . He was himself best known as a portrait-painter, though he also painted some historical and religious works. The Royal Academy holds his portrait of Queen Victoria (1842).
