520 2 # $a The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography states that the ceremony at which the medal was presented took place at the Freemasons' Hall (which Soane had designed in 1828); but the cataloguer of the RIBA's copy states that this Address was read out in Soane's house. The presentation was a recognition of Soane's position in his profession. In the previous year he had been offerred the Presidency of the Institute of British Architects, but had had to decline it as he was already Professor of Architecture in the Royal Academy and the Academy did not permit post-holders to hold similar posts elsewhere.
