508 # # $a The portrait of Holman is signed as drawn by Wageman and engraved by E. Finden.

Most other plates are signed by draughtsman and lithographer. Draughtsmen were J.M.C. Airey, Jas. Barber, J.M. Gatler, J.D. Agassiz, L. Haghe, W.I. Huggins, T. Daniel, J.G. Galler, Capt. Forbes and 'A Chinese artist'. Lithographers were L. Haghe or C. Haghe. Most plates carry the imprint of the lithographic printers, Day & Haghe, and the imprint of the publisher, Smith, Elder and Co. In some cases the plate is said to be printed from zinc rather than stone.

The printer is named in the colophons: 'G. Norman, Printer, 29, Maiden-Lane, Covent Garden.'

The work is dedicated by James Holman to the Queen [Adelaide].
520 2 # $a The author had been invalided out of the Royal Navy of Great Britain in 1810 and had become completely blind shortly afterwards. Nevertheless he undertook several journeys. Before the present publication he had brought out 'A Narrative Of A Journey ... Through France, Italy ...', and 'Travels Through Russia, Siberia ...'.

The present four volumes carry the publication-dates of 1834 (vols. 1, 2) or 1835 (vols. 3, 4). The first describes Holman's journey through Madeira, the Canaries, west Africa and Brazil; the second, through Brazil, South Africa, Mauritius and Madagascar; the third, through Zanzibar, the Seychelles, Mauritius, Sri Lanka and India; the fourth, through Malaysia, Singapore, China, Australia, New Zealand, Cape Horn and the return to Britain.

The plates show: (Vol. I) portrait of Holman, views of Tenerife, Fernando Po, Ascension; (v. 2) views of Brazil and South Africa; (v.3) views of Zanzibar, Mauritius and Sri Lanka; (v.4) views and one map of Guangdong and the China Seas.
