(Note: the plate following page [xxiv] and facing the first page of the main text reproduces 'Hogarth's Dedication, Written for a History of the Arts ...', and is not a dedication-plate for the present volume.)

Responsibility Note

The frontispiece and added engraved title-plate are signed as drawn by Hogarth and engraved by J. Mills. Some other plates are signed as drawn by W. Hogarth; almost all are signed by their engravers - most by J. Mills, one by F. Legat, five by W. Skelton, one by C. Grignion.

The added engraved t.pl. and five plates carry the publisher's imprint of John Ireland and the date.

The printer is named in the colophon on p.377: 'From the Press of W. Bulmer & Co.'

Summary Note

The publication-date of March 1798 is carried by the title-page and by the plate facing p.158. The date of December 1797 is carried by the plates facing pp. 147, 153, 323, and by the added engraved title-plate, which reads, 'Hogarth Illustrated By John Ireland Vol. III and last [vignette] Published Decr. 1797 by John Ireland'. (However ESTC states that there is also a variant of this added engraved title-plate, which reads, 'Hogarth illustrated from his own manuscripts by John Ireland Vol. III and last ... 1798 ...'. The publication-date on the first plate facing p. 223 is not legible.

19th-century calf, upper and lower covers decorated with 'Gothick' borders and central diamond-shaped panel; rebacked in 20th century, spines lettered 'Hogarth Illustrated Ireland - Vol. III. R.A. 1797'. Bound uniformly with the two volumes of John Ireland's 'Hogarth Illustrated' (1791).
