Responsibility Note

Twenty plates are signed as drawn by J.M.W. Turner R.A., and twelve as drawn by J. Buckler. All are signed by engravers - W.R. Smith, J. Archer, J. Le Keux, W. Lowry, John Pye, J. Scott, J. Landseer, C. Heath, T. Higham, S. Rawle, J.C. Varrall, H. Le Keux, S. Middiman, T. Milton, J. Archer, J. Roffe, W. Radclyffe, J. Higham.

Each plate carried the imprint of the publisher (but in the Royal Academy's copy those on pl. [7], [9], [24] seem to have been cropped in the binding). They appear variously as 'Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown', 'Longman, Hurst & Co.', 'Longman & Co., 'Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Co.' - generally joined with 'Hurst, Robinson & Co.', but in the case of pl. [20] joined with 'Robinson, Son & Holdsworth, Leeds'.

The in-text illustration on p.8 is signed as drawn by I. Buckler and cut by R. Branston; that on p.4, as cut by Branston. The others are unsigned.

The publication-date of 1843 is given by the title page. The plates had first been published serially as illustrations of Dr T. Whitaker's History of Richmondshire between 1818 and 1823, and carry their original dates of publication.
