Responsibility Note

The plates are not signed, but in her Preface the author states that they were drawn by herself after the 'authorities ... found in the index to the cuts' and 'accurately followed by that excellent wood-engraver Mr. W. Folkard'.

The printer is named on the title-page verso and in the colophon: 'London: Printed by A. Spottiswoode. New-Street-Square.'


A study of botanic book illustration was K. Nissen, Die Botanische Buchillustration (2 v. & suppl., 1951-66).

On the author see R.B. Gotch, Maria, Lady Callcott (1937).


The verso of the front loose endpaper is inscribed in ink, 'To the Library of the Royal Academy from the Author -'. Presented by Maria Callcott in 1842 (acknowledged RA Council Minutes, IX, 286).

Copy Note

The rear pastedown carries the binder's ticket, which reads, 'Bound By Westleys, & Clark. - London.'
