Summary Note

This is a bound set of twelve plates, without title-plate or title-page. Each plate is captioned in English and French, the English captions beginning, 'A Perspective View of ...', the French, 'Vue de ...'. The plates carry the following publication-dates: [pl.1] 1740; [2-4, 6-11] 1741; [5] Dec. 30. 1740; [12] 1742.

They show: Whitehall; Privy-Garden; Covent Garden; Grosvenor Square; Charing Cross; the Parade in St. James's Park; Lincoln's Inn; the Temple next the River side; ye Great Canal in St. James's Park; St. James's Palace next ye Park; ye Royal Palace of Somerset next ye River; ye Parade in St. James's Park.

The view of the 'Palace of Somerest' shows the site where William Chambers's Somerest House was afterwards built, which for many years was the home of the Royal Academy.

20th-century half calf, 19th-century marbled-papered boards; green morocco spine-label lettered 'Views In London 1740', spine lettered 'R.A.'
