The work was first published in French in 1819. In the French edition the plates had consisted of the frontispiece, one unnumbered plate and numbered plates 1-63. For this English edition A.C. Pugin has reproduced the French plates (from impressions made in France) and has added two plates, no. 44* ('Temple Of The Sybil - Tivoli') and no. 64 ('Capitals and Mouldings'), with corresponding additions to the text.

Normand compares the orders as drawn by Alberti, De L'Orme, Palladio, Scamozzi, Serlio and Vignola and as described by Vitruvius, with surviving ancient Greek and Roman examples. The plates show measured details of the orders. Normand's outlook owed much to J.-N.-L. Durand, and his outline engravings show the influence of Percier and Fontaine.

The work was well received. It was reissued in French in 1825 and 1828, and was soon translated into English (1829) and German (1830).
