520 2 # $a Here Smeaton describes how he built the Edystone lighthouse, to replace the earlier constructions of Winstanley and Rudyerd, which had been destroyed. Smeaton's invention of a suitable cement (described on pp. 102-123) has been regarded as a 'turning-point in the history of building materials'. Smeaton's lighthouse was not replaced until 1882 - when it was re-erected on Plymouth Hoe.

The book went into a second edition in 1792, and a third in 1813.
