In 1813 he advertised his School of Drawing; but from 1815 to 1817 travelled in Europe. From 1818 his School, established as a 'probationary school' for the Royal Academy and the British Institution, trained many successful artists.

Sass's Journey to Rome was adversely criticised in Annals of the fine arts (3/9, 1819), but was praised by Stendhal.
