Summary Note
In 1834 Franz Kugler had been appointed professor of art history at the University of Berlin - the first European chair in this subject. Kugler's Handbuch der Geschichte der Malerei, von Constantin dem Grossen bis auf die neuere Zeit had been published in 1837. This volume is a translation into English by Margaret Hutton of the first part only of Kugler's Handbuch; her translation of the second part, covering the Dutch, Flemish and German schools of painting, did not appear in print until 1846 (q.v.).
This part of the history is presented in six books: I. Early Christian period; II. 13th century; III. 14th century (Tuscany and upper Italy); IV. 15th century (Tuscany, Veneto, Umbria, Naples); V. 16th century. (Tuscany, Rome, Veneto) (Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael); VI. 17th, 18th centuries.
The folding frontispiece shows Michelangelo's designs for the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican palace, Rome.
