A compilation in the form of a pedigree book commemorating Colonel W. Hall Walker's gift to the British government of his stud in 1916, which became known as The National Stud. Illustrated with coloured plates after the paintings by James Lynwood Palmer, and watercolour drawings by George A. Fothergill and Edith H. Adie. There are 12 tipped in colour plates of horses, 5 other colour plates associated gardens & houses, 3 black & white horse paintings. Cover design, title page and borders by Fothergill.
The printer is named on page [237]: “Edinburgh: T & A. Constable. Printer to Her Majesty.”

The front free-endpaper carries a bookplate on which is printed: “With Col. W. Walker’s compliments. Gateacre Grange, Nr. Liverpool”
