Summary Note

Pilkington's biographic dictionary was first published in 1770 as The Gentleman's and Connoisseur's Dictionary of Painters. It was retitled A Dictionary of Painters in Henry Fuseli's editions of 1805 and 1810; and A General Dictionary of Painters in editions after 1824. Besides bringing out his revision of Pilkington, the poet Allan Cunningham also published his own six-volume Lives of the most eminent British Painters, Sculptors and Architects (1829-33).
