Summary Note

The catalogues of the paintings and drawings collected by Strange included several celebrated works, such as Poussin's 'Landscape with a snake' (bought by Sir Watkin Williams Wynn in 1773), and displayed a knowledge of Italian art that made him a valued advisor to collectors such as Sir Lawrence Dundas and William Hunter. They are followed by a 'Catalogue Of Mr. Strange's Works. Engraved after Pictures of the most celebrated Painters ...'; which lists twenty-seven engravings, with their prices.

Provenance

[Second copy:] The front pastedown carries the armorial bookplate of Lord Viscount Dillon, which is inscribed in pencil, 'C. ffoulkes 1914'. Viscount Dillon (Harold Arthur Lee-Dillon, 1844-1932) was Antiquary of the Royal Academy from 1903 to 1932, and a close friend of museum-curator Charles John ffoulkes (1868-1947), whose mother was the grand-daughter of the author of this book. ffoulkes may have presented this copy (along with Strange's vitriolic Inquiry into the rise and establishment of the Royal Academy of Arts, 1775) in 1935 partly at least in memory of the Academy's former Antiquary.

[Third copy:] The front pastedown carries the armorial bookplate of Edward Goddard. The verso of the front loose endpaper is inscribed in pencil 'S:A:H', i.e. S.A. Hart R.A., Librarian of the Royal Academy 1864-81.

Binding Note

[First copy:] 19th-century half calf, marbled-papered boards; rebacked in 1988, retaining earlier spine-piece, red morocco spine-label lettered 'Gilpin's Essay On Prints. - Strange's Catalogue.' Bound with three others.

[Second copy:] 18th-century calf; gilt-decorated spine, red morocco spine-label lettered 'Strange's Catalogue Of Prints'.

[Third copy:] 18th-century mottled calf; red morocco spine-label lettered 'Strange's Pictures'.
