General Note

The pamphlet catalogue describes the events portrayed in the painting and also includes 'Subjects of the pictures, painted by B. West, Esq. representing a series of events connected with the life and death of our Saviour' - a list of 11 paintings and one drawing (p. 12). The first edition appeared in London in 1814 (see 23/566); other editions in Leeds in 1833 and an American edition with completely revised text in Philadelphia in 1830 when the painting was exhibited there. The text has been attributed to Ange Denis Macquin [M’Quin].
