520 2 # $a The Act to secure the copyright of models arose - as Garrard explains in his introductory letter - from his exhibiting his models of a bull and a cow at the Royal Academy in 1795. The eleven documents collected here are chiefly correspondence between George Garrard and the Royal Academy from 1797 to 1799, but include the Petition presented to Parliament by Garrard, J. Bacon, C. Rosse and E. Coffin on 23 February 1797, a letter from the Board of Agriculture to the Duke of Bedford and Lord Egrement, 24 June 1797, the Paper laid before the Committee by the Duke of Bedford, Sir Henry Mildmay, S. Whitbread, H. Holland and W. Lock (no date), the Petition to the Commons by the same four (no date), and a letter from T. Erskine to G. Garrard, 28 April 1798.

Garrard had enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools in December 1778; and in 1784 Sir Joshua Reynolds bought one of his paintings. In 1800 Garrard became an Associate of the Royal Academy, where he exhibited many portraits and animal models. After his death the Academy paid his widow and daughter an annual pension.
