He had travelled to Italy about 1774-1776, at Robert Udney's expense; and exhibited frequently with the Society of Artists, the Free Society and the Royal Academy from 1771 to 1806. He was elected A.R.A. in 1773; and taught perspective in the Academy from 1788 to 1806. In 1803 he would publish his Practical Treatise of Perspective; but is best known for his Anecdotes of painters (1808), a supplement to Walpole's Anecdotes (1762-71).
